Getting The Most Out Of Your Chiropractic Care

If you are not familiar with what makes a chiropractor different from other doctors, you might be surprised to know that they care about the health of your entire body, not just your spine. Chiropractors have special training to know how the alignment and health of the spine affects the health of the rest of your body.

Going to the chiropractor for an adjustment can be a first step towards health or recovery from injury or accident. However, there are many things you can do to maintain the adjustment you’ve just received and help you in getting the most out of your chiropractic care.

Once you have seen the chiropractor for an adjustment, muscle memory can work against your healing, so following a few tips when you get home will help you in getting the most of our your chiropractic care.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Chiropractic Care

Treat Your Spine Well When You Go Home

For the rest of the day after your adjustment (and hopefully every day after that) be “body aware.” This means paying attention to your posture when you are sitting, driving or standing and even paying attention to your sleep posture as well.

Some general posture rules to follow after an adjustment:

  • Avoid sitting for long periods of time
  • If at a desk, keep your monitor at eye level and your arms and legs bent at 90 degrees
  • For proper sleep posture, sleep on your side or back (stomach sleepers will do more damage to their necks and spines from turning their head)

Also for proper sleep posture, sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees will alleviate pressure on your lower back and help if you’ve been experiencing pain. Keep these posture rules in mind after your adjustment and also to promote general spine health as well.

Stay Flexible and Active

Flexibility, physical activity and exercise all play a huge role to help you in getting the most out of your chiropractic care. After a chiropractic adjustment, your back muscles and spine will be retraining themselves and finding new muscle memory. Keeping active and keeping going, especially after an adjustment, will allow your back and spine to move more freely and avoid settling back into old, unhealthy muscle memory.

Combat bad habits

There are some common things that many of us do each day, without even realizing the damage it is doing to our spine. Guys, do you usually carry a wallet around in your pocket? If so, take it out before sitting down. Sitting on a thick wallet in your back pocket forces your hips out of alignment, putting more pressure on the lower part of your spine, therefore causing pain.

Proper Nutrition & Hydration

Vitamins, minerals and nutrients are some of the building blocks of each individual cell in our bodies. Maintaining proper nutrition will help your body and spine in the healing process. Also, proper hydration is important to keeping your spine and discs lubricated and at their optimal health.

Come Back Soon!

Depending on your reason for chiropractic care, your chiropractor will have a recommendation in the frequency of adjustments needed. If you are recovering from a motor vehicle accident, you may be returning to the chiropractor more frequently at first, and then less frequently as you progress through your treatment plan.

For general health and wellness, regular chiropractic adjustments (weekly or bi-weekly) can help you maintain your health.

We can’t emphasize enough, the importance of chiropractic care in your journey to health. They can also help to undo years of damage that your body has become accustomed to accommodating. To schedule an appointment with one of our chiropractors or physical therapists, please contact us today.
