Fight Back Pain from Flights with these 4 Tips
Airplane, more like airPAIN! Comfort is not the first word that comes to mind when traveling by plane. Sitting in such a limiting space for an extended period of time can be exactly what triggers back pain, and causes it to stick around for a while. Below are some helpful tips to be as relaxed on your flight as you will be on vacation.
Aisle Seat
If you have the option to select assigned seating, request a seaton the aisle. If you don’t have the option to pre-select your seat, arrive early to get an aisle seat. Trust us, you’ll be thanking us later. Having an aisle seat is the closest to “space” that you’ll have on a flight. This will give your legs the most room, not to mention the extra space next to you where normally another crammed passenger would have been. The extra space will allow you to stretch out your legs, relieving the stress that cramped spaces put on your lower back.
Back Support
If your carry-on is not too full, include a small back roll in it. If there is not enough room, a rolled sweater will suffice. Place this behind you, positioned at your lower back while you are inflight and seated. This will give you added support, help keep your back straight, and prevent slouching, which will relieve any pain or discomfort.
Keep Moving
Planes may not be the best place for a walk, but it will help. When the pilot turns off the fasten seat belt sign, take the opportunity to walk about the cabin. Raise your arms above your head for an extra stretch. Try not to stay sitting in one position for a prolonged period of time!
Hydration
If you have previous back pain from a former injury or chronic back pain, it can be heightened if you are dehydrated. This is due to the low pressure and humidity in the plane. If you stay hydrated during the entire flight, you are less likely to experience any issues, including back pain.
